I thought I was getting nice friendly date. Then bam, racists. They always ruin the moment with their racing.

Well, I'm really liking this new Aeria/Deni pairing much more than Aeria/Kincaid. It's somewhat stalkery of Deni to hang around her house, but hey, who's counting? They have a fun interaction with each other and work well together.

It was an interesting collab that focuses on dealing with some issues the spurii have to face. I just sort of want the bad people not to beso ham-handed. They feel too transparent as a plot device, and it doesn't make for interesting reading to just brush jerks-being-jerks aside so easily.

When a guy named Axeman is introduced, though, you know that stuff isn't going to end well.

Hare: 289/293 + 75 Div Bonus

Chapter 1

It started on a slimy note at first blush. I wasn't quite sure where the story would lead but it turned out that Kincaid is a respectable fellow at the end of the day. The rapport between him and Aurora was well played and the bouts of introspection served as a good emotional anchor for the chapter, doing a good job of characterizing Kincaid without being too lengthy or contrived. The second half seemed to drag on just a little bit, lacking the second character to break things up, but it was by no means bad. Overall I found it to be a good read, especially for getting acquainted with your character and arc. There were a few things I'd consider to be stylistic faux pas, but its probably just me being nitpicky.

Chapter 2

This one ended up being much more lively than the first. Kincaid gallivanting around the city after La Volpe did a good job of setting the atmosphere and tone for the piece, which came off (at least to me) as being kind of spy noir in a sense. The more upbeat and tense pacing was a good juxtaposition to the calmer, more introspective Kincaid of the last chapter. And as with the last chapter, I didn't notice any particularly glaring issues other than your damn cliffhanger ]:< Good job.

Val: 150/153

Friends and Foes

First and foremost, let me say this. Indicate who is who in a collab, and for the love of god, use contrasting font colors. Blue and slightly more greeny blue made it really difficult to figure out where one turn ended and the next one began. Onto the collab itself, Deni and Aeria have a good back and forth, which kept the dialogue from getting too tired as the story went on. I didn't notice any massive errors, although there were a few instances where things could have been worded a bit more eloquently, as I found myself having to go back and read a few sections over. Overall though, the quality was good. Things got a little dark towards the end, and I find myself intrigued by the character of Axeman, potentially on name alone.

Raph: 447/447

Aurora, Phantoms pt IX

Having peeked in on this arc, I knew a bit of what to expect going into this. What I didn't realize is how well the finale of this 'hunt' would be played out. As I've come to expect from you and Will, the back and forth between you two really lent this collab a proper feeling of gravitas and epicness. Your portrayal of the Vistra and its interactions with Keydis felt organic and well thought out. Overall there's not much else to say. It ticked all the boxes for what I'd expect, both from the two of you, and as what I'm guessing is the conclusion to a Vistra Acquisition arc. Full marks here.

Victory: Loss

This one was a bit more cathartic than the last, with a more down-to-earth (get it?) feeling about it. The interactions between Keydis and Annora were a bit more somber and tender than I've come to expect from the pair, but my exposure is largely limited to the few bombastic missions I've read from them. However, it's by no means an unwelcome change in tone. This collab really served to characterize the pair of them beyond what I'd previously seen, and lent some good emotional depth to them in the wake of the last collab's events. Mechanically I didn't find errors, and if there were any I was too enthralled in the story to notice, which is a good thing. There were a few sentences that seemed to run on awkwardly, but that might also be my own tiredness rather than any fault of yours. In general I found both Phantoms IX and this to bring a nice, fulfilling conclusion to this arc. Kudos and full marks.

CASTUS GRADING

Freckles:

173/223 - Phase One [4453]

Dude please, please stop acting like demvir are robots. They are mechanical beings with holes in their knowledge like any other being. A demvir core is not a nuclear clock, it is not a Swiss army knife for processing information. Your character is not able to calculate the sun's mass by plotting the course of stars.

Hal is not a supercomputer, he is a being that could best be described as a human being missing a lot of the extremities and with a redundant nervous system. If I continue to see you abuse in-game ignorance to give your character increasingly ludicrous mini-superpowers, I'm going to dock you more points.

Moving on, I am still seeing scattered spelling errors. "Mechina", "Enil", and others are still all over the place. I've been reminding you for two weeks now to proofread your writing, and I remain unconvinced you are. The content of the collab is rather scattered, with a lot of 'hurry up and wait' until the fight just sort of happens. Whether intentional or not, the fight kicks off and I get to talk about my favorite topic: conveyance.

When you write, you are attempting to make readers care about what you're writing. The characters, the scenarios, the settings, all of it. You want us to care about what you're writing, and to that end, utilize conveyance. Conveyance is the act of giving your reader a clear expectation and image of what is going on.

Here's what I notice a lot of from you: "x action happens, Hal does y, and thinks z." It's very dry, and I'm going to fall on an old adage for this one: "Show, don't tell."

When you write about an action, especially one you want to be important or dramatic, you need to show people what it is they're witnessing. Hal gets blasted in the back and it's over and done with in a few sentences. You scratch the surface by showing us the bullets biting deeply into Hal's chassis, but you don't tell us about the reverberating shock that echoes through his innards, rattling up his chest and into his head. You tell us Hal thinks "Ouch!" but you don't show us the hoarse clatter of his mechanical body striking the dirt, the inert caelitium blood within spewing in brief jets before beginning to dribble down his back in a grim display.

Dig into what your character is feeling. Give us reasons to care about them, about what's happening to them. Give us relatable perceptions, appeal to our sense of sight, sound, smell, you know the rest. Paint a picture so clear we can close our eyes and see it for ourselves.

40/129 - A Scaly Encounter [2586]

*sigh* Frecks man, I'm trying hard to help you here. You're going out of your way to make it hard for me to give you props, which is a shame because your foundation is solid. I'm falling back on what I said before briefly: your character isn't a supercomputer, he isn't an AI. He's an individual, he is not immune to pain. He is not capable of calculating time down to the nearest microsecond.

Barring all this, he is most certainly not capable of defeating a highly dangerous beast; alone, using a skill that he doesn't actually have, with a weapon that you haven't actually purchased or crafted. Hal does not - according to your own stat post - possess any melee skills beyond Pugilis, nor does he have in his inventory any sword or melee weapon.

Basilisks are tough. Really tough, actually. Tough enough that for them to be domesticated requires them to be blinded (to avoid their paralyzing gaze affecting travelers), and their teeth filed down (their rear-facing fangs are nigh impossible to get to release). By all accounts, Hal's arm should've been torn off or amputated.

I'm not giving you any leeway on this, there's no fault here but yours and Dys' for not looking at the Codex entry for them which has existed for months now. You fought a black basilisk - an exceedingly rare creature which requires extensive searching to find - out of the blue with no bearing on your plot. You killed it in a single bout, using skills that your character does not possess, and a weapon your character does not own. You suffered little to no wounds, and basically defeated it without much ado at all, to the point of flat out excluding the reasons the beasts are so dangerous to begin with.

Step it up Frecks, you're better than this.

Guest Grader: Finny:

538/538 - Secret Operation, the Codename is... [2691]

Way to take bits and pieces and run with them, Finny. Awesome work with this, I still love the ensemble you've put together and how they play off each other. One thing I'm gonna point out is that it does feel like Cicely takes a bit of a back seat once everyone else shows up. It's more of a personal preference, as she still gets plenty to say, but her position in the chapter might've been strengthened with some introspection, even if it were brief.

Altogether, good stuff. Enjoy some PM bonus for this, it's already applied to your grade.

It's always good to step outside of comfort zones and explore new writing perspectives. Writing as a wild basilisk attacking a traveler is a good change of pace from the adventures of Ignis and Harper. The basilisk, however, was really played down in its fearfulness, even if it's young.

Of particular note is that wild basilisks do have a paralyzing gaze -- and it does affect demvir. The teeth are also curved and rear-facing, meaning that anything it gets its mouth around is not coming back out without being shredded, as long as the basilisk is alive and fighting.

Technicalities aside, though, it felt like there was a lot of telling and less showing. It became difficult to figure out what was happening because of how much was going into describing the thought process of a creature whose thoughts probably stopped at "deal with threat." Describe more of the hissing, the darting neck, lashing claws, whipping tail. You had some of all of that, but it all felt minor in the grand scheme of things.

That's not to say this was terrible: the description of the hunting instincts was good, it just carried on for too long into the collab; the description of the sun on the scales, the movements of the basilisk, and so forth was good, but played too small a part in the writing.

There were few errors worth nothing in these chapters, so I'll focus mainly on the content. In the first chapter, we basically just have Rosa going through a whole makeover. On one hand, this is quite cleverly done: even if she escaped notice originally, changing her whole appearance makes it less likely for people to pick up on her later. On the other hand, though, her new look is so distinctive that from this point forward, it will be difficult to point blame anywhere else. Nor will Rosa be able to blend seamlessly into crowds. That's going to require a lot of change on your part in how Rosa handles things... but I get the impression that's what you were going for: a sort of 'awakening,' although likely not the one her mother refers to.

The second chapter felt a little bloated. Much of the conversation seemed to be "so this thing we both already know is still true, right?" It comes across as exposition, even though you're trying to play it off as a conversation, and it feels very forced. There's some intrigue here, but it feels very thing when the impression is that everyone except the reader already knows what's being hinted at. If you had written from Elara's perspective -- with her not aware of everything beforehand -- it could have been a bit more impactful.

One technical note: you want to avoid Cloud-speak in prose writing. By that, I mean this:

“...”

We're accustomed to that sort of thing from old-school RPGs and chats/IMs, but there are so many better ways to indicate silence or lack of a response. It feels like a waste.

Minja
Phase One [111/223]
Guys. GUYS. IS THIS CHARACTERS NAME JOHN OR JHON? Like Minja you spell it as Long Jhon. But Freckles you spell it Long John. This... concerns me because that means you guys didn’t proof the other. Like even if you’re in a collab, you need to make sure that the other person didn’t horribly mess up. Especially when it’s the name of an NPC repeated multiple times...

Okay first off, the comma is your friend. Use it. It’ll vastly improve your clarity. For example:

The strange pair had been waiting for their only contact inside the rogue mercenary group Long Jhon, (a.k.a. ‘Raptor Knight’) to return with Talon, the jungle demon, and hopefully a few other of the mercenaries.

Should be:

The strange pair had been waiting for their only contact inside the rogue mercenary group, Long Jhon,(a.k.a. ‘Raptor Knight’), to return with Talon, the jungle demon, and hopefully a few other of the mercenaries.

Note how the commas around Long Jhon (John?) emphasizes that the CONTACT is named Long Jhon (John?) . When I read it the first time without the comma, it makes it sound like the mercenary group was called Long Jhon (John?) .

Okay now for the elephant in the room. Calm down on all these epitaphs. Outside of the fact that according to a GM there’ll be actual epitaphs handed, if everyone has an epitaph it really just makes them silly last names. Also, generally, if they do have epitaphs usually they should match the character. In this collab we have The Inquisitor, The Savage Beauty, The Jungle Demon, and The Raptor Knight. It kind of sounds like you guys want to make a character edgey though the name alone. While i understand the sentiment, they mean nothing unless acted upon.

You call Aelflead “The Savage Beauty” but for a “Savage” she ends up acting pretty cool/sarcastic instead. Likewise, for an Inquisitor, HAL doesn’t seem to do much questioning or... purging of religions. Right now, these names appear only to be fluff. I don’t need you to tell me through the name that Aelflead is savage, write that out. I don’t need the name to be called a ‘beauty’, use descriptors to show that.

Content wise, this collab was a mess. Everyone seemed to be super schizophrenic for no reason whatsoever. Aelflead seemed to teeter between being sarcastic, to kind, to angry sometimes in every turn. Also, I understand that you want to keep her more as a disconnected character, the cool guy sort of archetype. However... at some points it gets very flat and uninteresting. It’s fine centering a character around a specific mood or way of thought, but so far it’s been very one-dimensional and I do not get a feel for who Aelflead is outside of caricature.

Now, I’m going to level with you for a moment Minja. That last thing and the spelling notes are not new things I’ve told you. I graded you in HD, I now grade you in PT. This has been repeated for months, probably even a year. I can’t make you improve, that’s something you have to do yourself. What you write right now does not captivate me. I see the same mistakes week after week and I’m just doing motions for these reviews. You need to step it up if you want to really hear some new feedback. writing. This is the reason your grade for this is so low. I see no change, I have not seen an improvement. That tells me that you do not value this critique, nor do you value your own writing.

Read other people’s writing, not just from the RP. Read some classics, read some popular authors, as people in chat for book recommendations. See how they structure their prose, figure out what creates a captivating narrative. Likewise, read things from the RP from the more experienced writers. Your issues stem from the core of your writing, and I honestly feel as if you need to reflect on what you plan on doing.

The choice [105/107]
How to solve problems, get belligerently drunk. Anyway, nice short chapter to tie up the time between big plot moments. I do like how Ai realized that she was acting different. That shows a nice character quirk outside of just being caustic for caustic sake. My one quip was on the speed the drunk conversation went. I find it a bit weird that Ai didn’t take a bit longer to realize that she was acting different. I know that Lex probably have clout enough in her life to make the change, but it seemed rather abrupt. The development is great, just be careful to build it slowly and not just heel-face turn it.

Will + 50 Bonus

Phantoms IX [325/325]
Phantoms X [148/150]
Victory Loss [122/122]
Seeing that these are neatly chronological, I’m just going to tackle them as a whole. Firstly, congrats on Vistra acquisition! But really, the narrative you and Colin created really is a model to how these arcs should go. Keyword being ARC. Essentially, making this arc an entire novel gives the power a lot of value. It’s the bankai arcs I’ve always wanted but never had.

Anyway, as for the actual encounter amazing job. First Colin, great job writing the vistra as a really credible threat, but not hogging the spotlight. In the end, this was Keydis’ fight and she really shone through it. It balanced the emotional aspect with the action and I never felt overwhelmed by each. You two played up the tension, and for quite a while I thought she was going to fail. The touches like what the crew was saying, the rather malevolent personality of the darn thing, and blood and sweat fight Keydis put up definitely made this one of the best things I’ve read in either RP.

The personal chapter half of the piece added some much needed quiet after the action half. Caeancora is really quite dark, and the emotional torment was rather distrubing at points. The only quip I have is that I wish that the chapter would have slowed down a bit. Keydis’ sudden resolve one shotting the thing was quite fast after the slow-boil emotional attack earlier. It by no means ruined the piece, just felt a bit whiplashed.

Finally, Victory: Loss was rather aptly named and a great moment for Annora and Keydis. I’m quite pleased that Annora acted like she did. It was realistic and as weird as it sounds, the fact it ended on a depressing note only strengthened the dynamic between Annora and Keydis. I loved the fact that neither Keydis or Annora acted out of character just to end it with their characters liking each other. The two probably have quite a bit of nonsense to sort out after this.

Now go hookshot some bitches.
