Day: 366 - I

It’s the halcyon days that everyone tries to remember. But, what happens when those memories fade?

His eyes jolted awake.

He breathed heavily, his mind wandering to the dream he had last night. It was a dream of the time before the Elite Four. It was the time of peace, prosperity. It was the time where Pokemon and human existed together in harmony. It was when youngsters all over voyaged to become Pokemon Masters. Those times seemed so foreign now.

Thunder crashed outside his window.

“You start tomorrow,” a voice whispered behind him.

The youth torqued his body in bed, reached under his pillow, grabbing the pokeball underneath it. The strangest old man stood behind him, hair a stark white, wearing what appeared to be a long lab-coat. “Who are you,” he spat.

The old man chuckled, “What do you think you’re going to do with that empty ball?” He stepped forward to the youth’s bed, “I go by many names, but you may simply call me the PKMN PROF, Oak for short.”

Oak? Why was that name so familiar?

“Tomorrow you join the Devil’s Game. You are cursed to pay back the sins committed by men like me. It’s a shame,” he said, a mock pity in his voice, “you will not last long without a Pokemon. The Leaders, The Elite Four, they’ll crush you alone.”

Oak reached into his pocket, pulling out three pokeballs. “Tell me,” he replied, “What do you want to do?”

“Win.”

A passing smile appeared on the PKMN PROF’s face, “Correct.” He placed two of the pokeballs back in his pocket, tossing the middle one to the forsaken adolescent. “Survive for me. Survive for me-”

Before he could complete his sentence, the youth cut him off. “I have a new name starting tomorrow,” he replied.

“It’s Blue.”

Primer: 366

It was called the Devil’s Game for a reason. They said the Devil himself created it as a means to punish the sinful. The Elite Four had decreed it. Every year there was a drawing, hundreds, even thousands, drafted into the game. They claimed it as a means of redemption, a means to cleanse the soul of the populace.

It was a punishment.

If you were picked, you were sent off to a far-away land, one far away from the Orange Islands. The land was called Kanto. It was a beautiful land, a land of color and legend. However, the residents of the land didn’t have much time to appreciate it.

The rules were simple in the Devil’s Game. Victory is glory. Defeat is death. There was one year to rise to complete the game, at which point the land would be cleansed once more.

Day: 366 - II

Blue opened his eyes, the memories of that morning slowly coming back. He was taken from his house early in the morning, stuffed in the back of a black van. There were others in there, though he couldn’t remember any of the names. Some were crying, but it was the silent ones that scared him the most.

After what felt like hours they had arrived at the port, before being shepherded into a magnificent boat. The S.S. Abigail. Hundreds were moved into the central parlor of the ship, the grand ballroom adorned with luxuries of all sorts. It was the last taste of paradise.

It was only seconds until the lights shut off, the smells of a suffocating gas being pumped in. The young ones were the first to fall, and then followed by the elderly. The adults and adolescents hung on though, it was a futile attempt to resist. Blue attempted to keep his eyes open, though his body fighting back with the urge to sleep. It was only seconds until he collapsed. An echoing voice was the only thing ringing in his ears.

“Welcome to Kanto”

Day: 365

“Blue! Wake up!” a familiar voice called.

Through groggy eyes, he looked up at the figure in front of him. The white hair, the lab coat. It was the PKMN PROF. “Where am I?” he said, massaging the pain on his right wrist. He felt a bump, following it along the circumference of his wrist before looking down at it. A navy blue line was etched into his hand, pulsating and stinging.

“Pallet Town, Kanto,” replied Oak.

Blue pushed himself up to his feet. “So it wasn’t just a bad dream?”

“Afraid not,” said the old man, “How is my gift doing?”

“I called him Faith,” replied Blue, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the ball.
Oak smirked, “What an idealistic name. Do you know why I am here?”
Blue shook his head, “Are you a competitor in the Devil’s Game?”

“I am a Professor,” he explained, “Every competitor is given a Professor. We act as your guides. We act as your mentors. We are your best hope to survive the Devil’s Game. To survive, you must face the Leaders, besting them in the challenges they put forth to you. Only then will you be deemed worthy to the Elite Four.”

“And only after defeating the Elite Four, will the Game be ended,” finished Blue, “A loss in the game is a sin. A sin will be cleansed.”

“Correct.”

Before Blue could respond, a voice cut him off. “Gramps!” Blue turned his head, as a youth his age approached. He had gray hair and was wearing a distinctive purple shirt and pants.

“Is this the new one?” asked the newcomer, “Doesn’t look that impressive to me.” The newcomer turned his head, before flashing a haughty smirk at Blue.

“The name’s Red.”

Red reached into his pocket, pulling out a pokeball of his own. A maroon circle was etched on his wrist as well. Another player. “What do you say?”

The pokeball shone bright, the strangest of pokemon being sent out. It was a four-legged beast, part plant, part reptile. Bulbasaur! Blue responded in turn, sending out Faith. The tiny turtle appeared, eyes alive with a joy that Blue hadn’t seen for years.

They fought in a primal way. Tackle for tackle, both still children. Faith hit first, Bulbasaur returning a blow in turn. Back and forth, back and forth. However, as the Devil’s game decreed, there could only be one victor. At the end, only the tiny turtle survived.

The adrenaline in Blue’s body faded instantly as he realized what he had done. He looked up to Red, a mortified look on his face. Red retained his smirk, as he showed his wrist to Blue. The ring was alight in crimson, as Red breathed in. The last breath, the youth fell dead on the ground.

Blue dropped to his knees, looking up to Oak. “Correct,” replied the old man. He pointed towards Red.

“That is a Rival,” mentioned Oak in a passing voice, his body becoming distorted in an electrical haze. Within seconds the man vanished.

Day: 364

They were called Routes, preset roads for trainers to travel on. It was a way to prevent hiding. If you tried to escape the Routes, Caves, and Towns, your mark would activate killing you instantly. By funneling players into routes, they would be guaranteed players. Towns were safe zones, and it was tradition to not fight those who were unaided.

The players came in all groups. Some were Trainers, those who put their lives on the line to win the game. Others were too afraid to risk their lives, residing in the cities as shopkeepers and citizens. There were three-hundred and sixty five days to live after all.

Well three-hundred and sixty-four now.

Blue travelled north. Route one, twenty-two, two , all seemed to be one continuous path. He needed to get stronger. Faith had grown stronger with each fight against the wild pokemon, becoming a powerful squirtle in his own right.

One route two he found a Pidgey. A Flying-type would help. An aerial force was key. The hatchling was caught easily, and quickly warmed up to him. Justice, that would be a good name. Another tenant that was lost.

On route twenty-two, a wild Nidoran Male was the first thing to catch his eye. The battle was fierce, the stubborn beast managing to force Justice to the tipping point. However, a timely pokeball saved him. “Prudence,” repeated Blue, as he looked at the newly caught Pokémon.

It was on Route Twenty-Two the memory of Red haunted his mind. While he slept, he dreamed back to the original fight. Where would Red have been? He would have probably had a Pidgey, they were common, and Bulbasaur would have been strong. The dream continued as they fought one more, Blue won. He saw Red’s death, that cocky smile. Blue awakened once more, pushing away the nightmares.

The Viridian Forest waited for him.

Many rap battles by the Death Rider Record crew were had, as the label signed Dr. Dre and his brother Snoop Dogg to the team.

Eventually making their way to Pewter City, the record executive Brock called the team wack, E smalls took offense to this and slapped his bitch ass until the pussy cried and gave the crew some bling.

E smalls, Flo Rida, and Dr. Dre improved their flows so much they got promotions in the label. Dr. was so sick he got two.

In a hurry through Route Two, Kaze caught a second hellbird. But to his horror this Red Hood was a spy. That is until the next battle when he was wiped out by its former partners. No need to more the traitor, Kaze move forward into the forest where the cyan spark rodent appeared. Wing unimpressed with this new monster yawn and One Hit KO's it. Training up in the forest, Kaze and Co came out and into Pewter. Heading for its greater townhall, Kaze face off against a cultist. Defeated in moments, the cultist screamed of avenging by his head priest, the Rock God know as Deimos Brock. Taking a breather, Kaze readied for this tough boss fight.

(Not really much with this update.)

After blazing a trail through route 2 and most of Viridian Forest, our hesitant adventurer drowsily steps out into the outskirts of Pewter City at the break of dawn. The stony grey city is awash in the golden light of the rising sun, solid and imposing. Zee can already tell that the further he goes, the harder things would be. And after stumbling through the forest, his trio of companions comforting him, supporting him, and pressing him to do better, the small team comes out wiser and more experienced. So far they are undefeated, a fact that strangely brings on a feeling Zee has never felt before - pride.

But it is a small and frail pride, one that has yet to stand the test of harsh times. Of rocky waves and stony seas that build strong teams, and close friends. That soon changes.

After resting a night at the Pokemon Center, Zee learns that there is a way to test the strength of his team - and himself as a trainer. The Pewter City Gym, home to the Rock-type trainer Brock, stands amid the small homes of the city and draws all eyes. For the rest of the day, Zee tries to learn more about Brock but gains nothing. Still hesitant, it's up to Kaio-ken and Hedwig to give the boy the push he needs. Using what little knowledge he has of the gym, and of pokemon, Zee follows in the footsteps of Kaio-ken.

The gym was expansive, but bare and only two men stood inside. Mistaking the first as Brock, Zee stutteringly demands a challenge. The battle does not last long, but it is not an easy fight. The dust settles and Kaio-ken stands over the two enemy pokemon he took down. They had been stronger, faster, and more experienced leaving him at a disadvantage. Only two things saved him: they underestimated him, and he was a water-type.

Those two facts, though small, were enough to leave Kaio-ken standing victor. Beaten and bruised, the tiny turtle started for Brock and was stopped by Zee. His trainer understood how badly Kaio-ken wanted to test itself against stronger opponents, but Zee wouldn't allow it's hunger for challenge kill it and so they left. The next day would bring the end of Brock.

And so it came to pass. Through the terrible grating sounds of raked gravel over glass, Kaio-ken hit the rock-type pokemon Brock threw at Zee with everything it could muster. It was more than the either a lone geodude or onyx could handle, and they were swept away in the current of Kaio-ken's growing strength.

Single-handedly, Kaio-ken had won his trainer the boulder badge.

After rumbling with greasers in an unsanctioned fight, Glass Joe was taken down by a sucker punch from a Butterfree high on bath salts. Although the new addition, Ivan Drago came to his defense, his face was promptly eaten. Finally, Disco Kid beat the addict insect into submission by burning his gloves. Sadly, Adrian taken down by one of Butterfree's homies on the way to the hospital...

ADRIANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

Disco Kid and Bald Bull went on to win their first pay-per-view fight in honor of their fallen comrades and were rewarded the Boulder Belt for their efforts!

Murderer, a youth falsely accused of murder, watched the movie shawshank redemption. He's escaped from prison, stolen a pokeball from some old retard, and then kicked his grandson's teeth in before leaving town. Now he's out to kill every witness that falsely testified and clear his name.

Update 3/2/2013

Now, many be be asking, why did Red start on this journey? Why did he decide to become the greatest Poke-Interior Decorator the world had ever seen? Simple, because those end tables are in no way going with that absolutely gaudy lamp. Seriously, did you pick that up at Goodwill. Whore-endous.

Speaking about whores, a particularly fabulous Rattata showed up. I think he was part of the Golden Globe Committee. One thing led to another an Tina Fey had to do something with Amy Poehler.

However, being one woman down didn't change much. It was still time to fix this absolutely horrendous Pewter Gym. Rock theme? Really? Hello, it's the police. Personality and Charm have been missing for over 72 hours. It's time to close the case.

And Brock. Dear, Brock. Your attitude screams 80s but your outfit screams Help, I'm homeless! But, I guess this badge for making your gym much more opening balances things out. At least now you can entertain. Gosling liked that so much that he gave himself a fashion makeover.

So venturing east, Red quickly fashion policed most of the upcoming routes. The hardest part was Mt Moon. It clearly wanted the cave theme but ended up going with more deep hole (Red chuckles to himself).

Cerulean, now that looks better! Unfortunately, that Rival designer showed up. Too bad he tried bring back place-mats. Gosling quickly fixed by instead suggesting a nice tablecloth. The design off was a powerful thing, with both Cooper and Zeffron ascending. With a fabulous rhinestone, Zeffron reached a new level of OHMYGOD.

Speaking about place-mats, the fabulous design off attracted anew designer's attention. An Oddish (Loving the whole nature theme. Seriously plants can liven up a room. Though, a weird fixation on powder.) named Matt Bomer (more like boner, amirite).

Matt's first job was to fix up the gym. Indoor pools went out of popularity years ago, now it's chlorine. Why not keep the sea theme through a nice picture frame or maybe move to a seaside house Misty? Ahh well, some stipple effect will do. And the next fantastic badge was given.

Voyaging south, he quickly made his way to Vermillion, before heading East. There was a fashionista that caught his eye. He made smart into chic. He made casual into laid back ware. He made 30 dollar pants into 150 dollar Professionally Ripped Jeans. His name? Hugh Jackman the Drowzee.

Isn't Rubi cute? We ran into a Pidgey and now have a new friend named Albatross, and Rubi and Alba basically slaughtered everything in their path until we got to Pwdar. Brock gave us some trouble, but with tons and tons of potions we managed to come up with the right pattern of attacks to survive! Good job, Rubi and Alba! Things have been prety nice on the journey so far, but it's kind of lonely with just the three of us. Maybe we'll met some new friends tomorrow?

With their fame growing, Disco Kid, Bald Bull and their new protege Clubba Lang were bound to encounter some haters. As such, no one was surprised when that trash-talking Machop said he could drop Disco to the mat with one Karate Chop! Though the Kid and Bull KO'd the white-collar Machop with ease, their corner man Clubba Lang, persuaded by their opponent's promises of riches, left to pursue his singing career.

Machop's coach H.R. Palmer however, was not impressed, and decided to join Kid and Bull in their quest for title gold, along with his bare-knuckle-brawling Journeyman, Butch Coolidge and potential gold-winning prize fighter, Rocky Balboa.

Together, they triumphed over the reigning champs of Cerulean and Viridian Gym in a vicious double-bout, winning themselves two belts!

Following the match, Ivan Drago, having received an uncanny face transplant, rejoined the team!

Rubcante and I had fun while it lasted, but the web-based service I was playing on futzed up during an epic battle for the Cascadebadge. After Rubi and Alba met their new friends Shale, Apophis and Lasciel and were on their way to becoming the best buddies anyone could have, the world came to an awkward and abrupt end. Everyone was so looking forward to what the Dome Fossil would become, and how great we all would be.
