Halcyon Days Nuzlocke Challenge!! ​ Welcome to the Nuzlocke Challenge! I'm Raph, something of an enthusiast on the challenge. Some of you may be asking: what is the Nuzlocke Challenge? Well, for those who aren't familiar with the rules - let's go over the basics.​ 1. You can only capture the first Pokemon you encountered in each new area. This means one Pokemon for every route, cave, river, building, etc. you enter, and only the first one you encounter. If that Pokemon dies before you can catch it, you cannot catch anything else in that area. 2. If a Pokemon faints, it is dead. You must release it. Cherish your partners well. You'll never know what might take them from you, and when. With that out of the way, let's get down to the specifics of our particular Nuzlocke Challenge. We'll be implementing 3 specific optional rules for this run, so as to make it more engaging without making it too difficult: 1. Your starter Pokemon is determined by the last digit of your Post Count Number. Your starter Pokemon is determined by how many posts you've made on the forum! If the last digit is 1-3 you start with a Grass type, 4-6 is Fire type, 7-9 is Water type, 0 is your choice! 2. The 'No Catch' rule is only enforced after you receive your first Pokeballs. Instead of locking out the earliest areas of the game, you are allowed to begin catching the moment you receive your first Pokeballs in the game. After this, however, the rule is applied as normal. 3. No Glitching your game. That means no missingNO shenanigans or level 142 Kangaskhans. With the rules done and over with, let's get down to business. This run is open to all members of the forum, Halcyon Days or not. Emu/ROM downloads will be provided in links below, for those who do not possess original handhelds or cartridges. Please post in this thread to claim your badges on the forum, declare Pokemon catches and deaths, and if you have failed your run. Similarly post in this thread to declare your participation in the run. This is going to be a good, old-fashioned race to the top. The first participant to defeat the Elite Four, and the Champion, will receive a 2500 Kan reward courtesy of myself. ...And so our hero Kaze's journey begins, as his quest for wealth is set into motion, fate's gambit is soon found to be dropping a mythic turtle of the non adolescent ninja variety on him as his rival Zen is given unto himself an eldritch plant-thing. Forced to battle, our neurotic hero starts giving commands to the turtle creature Kamehameha.

Barely winning his forced battle with Zen, not even needing the magic potion from the strange device in his room, Kaze moves forward into the unknown world.

Zee, a hesitant and uncertain youth, takes his first steps to become a pokemon trainer - the first certain decision he has made in his young life. Accompanying him is his trusty squirtle, Kaio-ken, whose bold nature drives Zee to do his best as their journey begins!

In their first confrontation, the schoolyard bully - John. With his pet bulbasaur, the two gang up on Zee in hopes of an easy target. Sadly for them, Kaio-ken wasn't about to let his trainer get armed. With all the swag the little turtle carried, it took hit after hit from the bulbasaur. While it had been a close match, Kaio-ken's determination and respect for his trainer, carried him through the fight.

After the run-in with John, Zee is roped by his town professor and pokemon expert - Professor Oak. With the dangers of pokemon and his growing age, Professor Oak asks Zee to make a run for the next town up where a package awaits him. Fully terrified, Zee hesitantly steps out from his home town - Kaio-ken leading the way. For the most part, this trip is eventless with Zee running in fear of every piece of writing grass. Their return is celebrated in Professor Oak's lab where the old man unveils the latest technology for pokemon research - the pokedex. Unexpectedly, Professor Oak asks Zee if he would lend a hand in building up the machines database so that future generations of pokemon trainers and enthusiasts can accurately cospla- research rare pokemon.

Before he can even bother to reply, Kaio-ken takes the device for Zee, and leads the boy out of lab. Its sights already set on seeing more of the world, and emboldening his trainer.

With their new task at hand, both Zee and Kaio-ken set back out for the nearby city. With a farewell to his mother, and a going-away present from John's good-natured sister, Zee rushes through the tall grass as fast as he can. Giving his partner barely anytime to experience the thrill of a challenge.

Along their way, Zee purchases a few pieces of equipment to make sure his friend stays safe, and asks to be shown by a friendly old man how to capture other pokemon (as he wanted to give Kaio-ken some new friends... and sparring partners). Without much protest, the old man finishes his coffee and demonstrates for the lad how to capture other pokemon. With this new knowledge, Zee makes a detour for route 22 where he catches his next partner- Beel the male Nidoran. And though Zee wants to see what lays further down route 22 (with the fabled Victory Road and Pokemon League just out of sight), he instead flees at the sight of John whom -as he found out later- also had been asked by Professor Oak to help with the pokedex.

Now with the skittish Beel (who tends to hide behind Zee), the young trainer marches back to get his companions healed. The only problem: Kaio-ken continuously trying to pull him back to more fighting.



From the pokecenter Zee rushes to make up for lost time and heads straight for route 2. There the small team meets their next member: Hedwig the proud Pidgey.



After another run back to the pokecenter, the exhausted Zee wants nothing more to rest. But Hedwig and Kaio-ken give the boy no rest and shove him out the door into the cold night. The forest ahead filled with strange and wonderful adventures.

Prologue

Prologue -- A Long Time 'Til Touchdown​

You're woken by the cacophonous roar of the storm outside, a frown immediately marring your face. Downstairs is silent, and you suspect your mother may be passed out drunk again. Pushing aside the covers, you stand, before a sudden agony lances down your body. Sweeping a broad hand at your nearby desk, the capped syringe is a healthy sight. With a dry hiss under your breath, you slide the needle in, depressing the plunger slowly but surely.

Welcome to Kanto, as they say.

Some say it was the creature itself, some say it was disease brought on by infection. Whatever the case, you glance briefly down at the scarred flesh of your left leg, frowning at the pinkened tissue. Weedle, you remembered distantly. That was what they called it. Weedle.

A cane would be a precious drain of money. Cash you couldn't afford to spend right now. You hear distant snores from below, and heave a sigh through the dehydration. Stairs used to be a pain, but now you're just sort of used to it. You hobble down one leg at a time, peering cautiously out at the trashed living room. She'd had another breakdown, it seems.

All the better for you to sneak out.

It used to be simple, real simple. You made the runs, they gave you the cargo, you took the cargo back, get paid. The end, no questions asked. What the hell would happen now, nobody knew. The best runner in Pallet Town crippled, with only a second-string rookie left. The door doesn't close when you leave, seems your mother broke the lock kicking it open. You sigh, the most recent assignment burning in your mind as you hobble slowly towards the gates out of town.

A soft clearing of someone's throat behind you makes you stop, and you distantly remember you don't have your switch on you. You curse, prepared to go down fighting as you turn, but halt. It's Oak.

What his first name was, nobody knew. Hell, nobody knew what his job even was. Some say he was just a drug runner for Sinnoh, others let on there was more to what he did. Either way, the dude liked to go by the Professor. Strange guy, but he hadn't ever led you astray.

You don't speak, never did much. He makes up for it, talks about the dangers of the wild, gesturing vaguely at your leg in a way that makes you grit your teeth. Before you can slug him in the jaw, he's grabbed you by the wrist and led you off. Back into his den, back into the lab.

Your name is Dune, and you were a mule for the Kanto drug cartel known as Team Rocket. Welcome to Kanto.​

Chapter One

Chapter One -- Hard Knock Life​

The lab smells like iodine and air freshener, you're not quite sure if it's to cover up the smell, or the smell itself. He drags you up to the front, still yammering about the creatures. Pokemon, you remind yourself. Won't do to think of them like animals, you've had Oak talk down your ear about that more than enough. When he stops, you prepare to excuse yourself. The longer you're held up, the more likely it is the client will greet you with a switch in the stomach.

The lab doors blast open, and the whelp himself walks in. Luke, the adopted grandson of the Professor himself. You two never really got along, maybe it was his...enthusiastic attitude.

Kid wanted to be a runner ever since you started being one. Maybe to prove himself, maybe to knock you down, who knows. Point is the kid never got the chance...not for a lack of trying. His voice grates on your ears, and you resist the urge to teach the kid a fresh set of manners. Any second now, Oak'll shut the kid down...but he doesn't.

He stands there and listens, and then the strangest words pass through his lips. "Dune, you're a good runner, but you need something to keep you safe. I can't give you anything illegal or you'll be caught, so this is it. They're basics, but you can have one. Choose."

You look to the side, and perched on the desk are three familiar objects. Pokeballs, containing who knows what. Oak was a helpful guy, but damn if he didn't love making you work for any help you got. You walk over to the table, ignoring Luke's protests as you select one of the three. The center draws your eye, and without a moment's hesitation you grab it up. Now Luke's protests have reached a fever pitch, and Oak shocks you again.

"Luke, you can have one too."

The orb in your hand splits open, and the contents are revealed in a flash. Some sort of turtle, and you peer curiously down at it. Strange thing goes wandering off into some nook of the lab, and you can't be bothered to stop it. Oak speaks up again, tells you what it is. Squirtle, he calls it. Poor thing doesn't deserve a name like that. You speak, finally, and one word passes through your lips. "Zeke."

Luke looks confused, but Oak just smiles. Zeke's already on his way back, a pair of gaudy little shades perched on its face. Who made them that size, you've no idea. You set off for the door, and Zeke's already by your side. Strange little thing, bounces with all the energy you can't express anymore. Your limp carries you halfway to the door, before Luke's whine reaches your ears. Oak put power in his hands, and all he itches for is to use it.

Kid'll need some hard knocks.

You look down, and Zeke's already fired up - you're already liking the little guy. In a flash, another creatures enters the lab. Oak's assistants turn to watch in interest, and a strange little quadruped tumbles out. Thing's got some sort of plant on its back, all folded up. Oak interjects once more, dubs it a Bulbasaur. Luke can't be bothered, he's all anger and no focus with only you in the way.

The fight's fast, dirty, and you're suddenly aware of a faint itching in your leg. Bulbasaur roars, and Zeke hesitates. Enough for the green thing to land a fair hit. Little Zeke stumbles back, and you lock eyes with Oak. He nods, time for the hard knocks. You're not sure what Luke is saying as you kneel before the Squirtle, but it quickly grows in pitch before degenerating into raucous complaining. You stand up, and Zeke stands with you, good as new. Even if what you take is a little modified, you know the workings of a Potion inside and out by now.

Bulbasaur doesn't last much longer after that, and you don't bother to listen to Luke's furious remarks as he storms out. You turn back to Oak once, and receive another nod. That's that then, time to get to work. Zeke in tow, you two set off. Destination: Viridian City.​

[Kaze]

Moving as quickly as he can to the next town, Kaze and his mythic turtle Kamehameha come to the City of Viridian. In awe of the green and wanting a soda, Kaze ends up needing to go home with a package for that mad scientist Prof Oak.

After delievering the parcel, the mad scientist in his cacophony of laughter and evil joy shoves a strange book into Kaze's hands. "Spy as many of the dread monsters you can find, and bring me back the data when you are done. Thus I can then rule the world with my Monster Mind Manipulator and you can have the cure for your ailment."

"Am I sick" Kaze nervously questioned.

"Yeah." Zen spoke as he too appeared with his own book in hand. "This Maniac of Madness infected us when we were not looking during our battle. Now we might die if we sit here and idle."

And with that the youths hightailed it. Back to Viridian, Kaze had a java savy gent show him the ropes to catching more monsters to survive this mission to complete. To insure his mighty mythic monster's survival, he bought from the Mart eight Prof Oak brand detainment modules and headed to Route One to find him a new partner.

Back into the grass a screech of horror gave way, a bird of most terror descended to maim. Putting Kamehameha to work, Kaze captured and tortured the dread hellbird so strangely named Wing.

Back into the city, they heard such a ruckus they spend so quickly toward the Cosmic Evil gate known only as Route Twnety-Two. Coming to this place of rotting grass, a new set of monsters leapt forth. The first was a cruel blue rodent-like creature, covered in deadly spines. All it took was one hit and the detainment module worked. Now the trio was joined by their poison breathing comrade, Ran.

Taking time to strengthen his monster well, Kaze continued through the hellish gate country. However then he was stopped. Ahead was his dread rival Zen, plant-thing of horror green, and his own newly attained hellbird, Wing's mortal nemesis. After several minutes, and with need of medical attention, the dust cleared and Kaze moved forward once more victorious and a few hundred dollars richer.

With the help of the ever kind benefactor Joy of the Saint Don Giovani Hospital for Monsters, Kaze and his force of three monsters moved on towards unknown horror. Route Two and the dread phantom forest which the prior city was named.
