[PM][1st/10th/Captains] Week 198: Taishuu Practical: Our Legacy

Status
Not open for further replies.
Although the sudden change to the battlefield perked his interest, Senesati redirected his attention to cleric captain for a second and replied, "Good afternoon to you, Makoto." He turned his head back toward the battlefield, before he continued on, "The Head Commander ordered an attack. Only a fool would stand in his way."

Senesati knew Sayis took these tests very serious. This was not the days of division tech training where he could have a little fun in the process, this was a test for potential future leaders within their ranks.

Much has changed in you, Sayis Inuzuri...

As the gorge croaked and moaned as it shaped and molded into its strange new form, Lilith’s energy flowed simultaneously, rising to her face as the decorated tattoo became encapsulated in a bright orchid glow. She looked to Haresuno, sharing a momentary glance of perfect understanding.

Then like a dam unleashed, her reiatsu burst out in a torrent of energy. The draping sleeves of the woman on the battlefield lashed and flared like violent whips, escalating more and more onto the pinnacles of her ability until…

Ban… Kai..!!!

There wasn’t a beat missed as Haresuno fell in tandem with Lilith’s release. Together, the pair flashed closer to their target. The very second Sayis was in clear view, the Adept flicked his hand out, calling, “Daishou,” and letting the kidou run its course.

“Homurahana.”

A black arrow dropped beneath the Soutaichou’s feet.

And ebon-red petals clung delicately to his robe.

The kidou hurled him sideways into one of the maze corridors and into a wall where one of Haresuno’s many traps lay.

A series of wires were strung up like a net down this particular way, and when Sayis flew down it, unable to maneuver away, he snapped the wires and collapsed parts of the walls. Had he been walking, they would have fallen on him, but his safety lay in speed, as well as his despair.

At the end of Daishou, when Sayis was finally able to touch ground, a path of rubble lay behind him, and a solid wall ahead.

Then came the earth shifting, and a hole opened up under the champion, throwing him into its hungry maw.

Inside the canyon, more and more petals lined the surfaces, decorating the floor and walls like a darkly romantic bed of roses.

A woman’s voice beckoned up from above, calling the Soutaichou softly. Her voice was empty of decorous etiquette or formal designation, but instead, she spoke with the candid familiarity of an intimate companion.

“Sayis… What are you doing down there?”

And then rang the sound of fingers snapping… as a tower of flames blazed all around the Arcane king.

[177/1,311]
[176/1,137]

From the pit, Sayis' voice lifted forth, heavy with disappointment. "Even now... facing me... you show no fear?" Enshrouded in shadows and lingering smoke from the fire petals, the Soutaichou looked impassively upward. "Are you so certain that I will not hurt you... that you spare not a second for your own protection?"

As more of the smoke dissipated, it became clear that only one of the arcanist's hands were filled. "Tangent!" Sayis called out, whipping Karil behind himself to hit the barrier. The sound of shattering glass echoed up from the pit. In an explosion of force, the Kidou King was there, above the lip of the pit, his cold grey eyes boring straight into Lilith. His arm thrust forward, Karil's heavy blade piercing through Lilith's hakama, through her calf, and downward into the stone below.

His eyes flashed to Haresuno in the background. "Of what use is a maze," he asked harshly, "if you come straight to me?" His hand released Karil, leaving it embedded in the woman's leg, pinned to the floor of the labyrinth. Then he was gone.

"Hiryuu-" The voice came from behind now, full of dark promise. Such malevolence from the normally gentle Soutaichou was unsettling, even to himself. Behind Haresuno now, Sayis pointed with his spear. "-gekizoku-" The Adept would have time enough to turn around perhaps. Time to flee, possibly.

If he did so, then Lilith, pinned as she was right in the firing line, would have to take the full brunt of the attack.

"-shintenraihou!"

Like the wrath of an angry god, the lightning cannon erupted from Sayis' outstretched arm, poured through the purely conductive spear. The blast filled the entire corridor Haresuno had created, tore at the rock walls, ripping them apart as the thunderous fulmination charged straight toward the two vice-captains.

The blinding, blue-white glow; the cacophonous roar of unleashed fury; the acrid scent of scorched ozone, so strong it could be tasted; the tingling, crawling sensation of impending doom... the infamous Hadou overwhelmed all five senses, wiped away all other concerns.

All that, with only seconds to act.

[350/1858]

Lilith gripped her hands around the base of the sword, heaving and pulling in hopes of tugging the sword free from her thigh. The blood dripped through the cloth, spilling onto the dirt ground and soaking the stone red. Sweat drenched her brow, and when Lilith finally glanced up, her irises gleamed with silver and teal, reflecting the colors of the Soutaichou’s vicious explosion.

Haresuno had no time to show his surprise, or awe. Somehow Sayis had gotten behind him, and was now firing one of the most deadly electrical kidou known to Seireitei. By the time he had heard the first syllable, he had known the kidou. Haresuno was so used to being targeted by electric kidou that it had resulted in him thoroughly studying up on any with so much as a static shock.

But most importantly, when he heard that hadou being enchanted, he got pissed. If the whole damned world was filled with shinigami, he would bet they would all use lightning kidou, and then somehow use it on him. It set his blood a-simmering.

As Haresuno whipped around, he began fortifying himself for the oncoming attack. His reiatsu fueled his muscles and bones, hardening them to withstand the oncoming attack.

Lilith’s reiatsu flushed outwards with extraordinary intensity as her eyes narrowed in readiness. Her muscles clenched, her teeth grit, her breathing drove out in heavy strains.

The hadou was ripping through his labyrinth now, tearing apart the walls and simple traps. It crackled in the air as it raced to him. Yet he made no effort to get out of the way, or even erect a barrier.

Instead the Adept relied on a technique he had discovered in training, and hoped that it would not fail. With it, he would be a solid wall through which nothing could destroy.

Haresuno rose on hand at the surging torrent of electrical kidouryouka.

The spell was massive, and powerful, all the simple efforts of the Arcane Specialist’s very own captain were in it, and it should have flattened anything in its way.

It did.

Until it came to Hares...

“Sai-kun, stop it!!!

A smaller girl was yelling at Sayis -- her voice shrieking over the clamorous roar of Hiryugekizokushintenraihou. She stood just a few feet in front of Haresuno, waving her hands frantically over her head. Her tomboyish brown hair bustled with the stormy vortex of Sayis’ spell, and her gray-violet eyes beamed with terror and dread.

SAI-KUN!!!!!

But it was too late. The massive wave of energy buried the girl in its wake, obliterating her into tiny dancing spirit particles.

And in her place, a wall of pure energy erected, sucking the rest of the oncoming energy shock into its abyssal void.

Some of the energy had struck Haresuno, but it was a mere fraction compared to the behemoth wave that was meant for him and Lilith.

Using his courage and determination to protect his friend, Haresuno had focused his mind, his body, as it took the remaining searing electrical jolts and barely burned the palm of his hand until the kidou had past. He stood there with an outstretched hand, smoking.

Bending down he thought to Lilith, Drop the damn sword down the pit, Lilith.

Flushing her energy through her limbs, the woman finally ripped Karil out from her leg and tossed the blade down the pit. Her eyes flashed up at Hare as sweat-covered bangs clung to her forehead.

Smirking, she said while gripping her leg and wincing, “I can’t believe he thinks we’re not afraid. After this, I bet we could kick his butt at poker.”

As he touched the earth, closing the pit with his God Hand slowly, Hare whispered, “Daishou,” once more to throw the Kidou King away, and deeper into the maze.

----

When Sayis arrived in the obscure depths of Haresuno’s maze, smoke and haze eclipsing over the surroundings, the familiar woman’s voice spoke again.

“A captain doesn’t show fear, Sayis -- not because they’re not afraid, but because fear dulls their instincts. Fear empowers the enemy. But despite those feelings, a captain must always keep his
eyes forward.”

The woman stepped around the corner as the click of her heels resonated against the walls.

“Can't you see? Those two are just trying to stop their nightmares from swallowing them.”

Emerging out from the overcast shadows as the smoke rose and escaped, the woman finally stepped out, making her presence known. Lavender hair fell in soft, straight layers down to her shoulders. She wore a simple shihakushou with the hakama-himo tied into a bow at the edge of her lower back. Behind wide glasses, large, maroon eyes gazed outwards -- a stark contrast against her smooth, porcelain skin. The woman smiled softly, her lips curling in geniality as a slight pink tickled her cheeks.

“Hello, Sayis. I’ve missed you...”

[349/1,660]
[465/1,602]

Temae Mononisuru
By paying 3% reiatsu, Lilith can overwhelm one opponent with the active emotion, making them physically incapable of attacking for one turn. During this turn, the opponent may not act in any way that attempts to cause damage to Lilith. This does not paralyze the opponent, but it prevents attacks; the opponent may defend or dodge instead. This attack is only usable 2 out of every 5 rounds.

"Wisteria..."

The name was hardly more than a whisper.

There was a falter in the coldness of his gaze, softening the lines around his eyes. Sayis laughed harshly, shaking his head with a wan smile. His eyes met Wisteria's, briefly reveling in the familiarity, enjoying the flood of memories both good and bad.

Sayis...

That starless night when they had first met, when Wisteria had saved him from a pathetically weak hollow... The day they had boldly challenged each other to see who could learn Coiling Abyss first... Going out for ice cream with Kyuto...

Sayis!

Like two parts of one whole, they moved flawlessly together in battle, each complementing the other perfectly... Synergy didn't begin to describe it.

I know.

They knew one another, knew each other's strengths and weaknesses, knew how to cover for the other and build on their attacks... It had been a perfect flow, never better than during their daring two-person assault on the Sine Qua Non generator...

From the shadows of the labyrinth, a shadowy form stalked toward him. Two gleaming mirror-like eyes stared up at him, sleek muscles rippling beneath the big cat's black and grey-striped fur. "Sayis..!" the spirit roared at him aloud. "She's not--!"

"I know," he repeated aloud, still smiling faintly.

Trust and faith when all the other shinigami had turned against them... Courage and solidarity in battle... The uncertainty and fear when they were to be separated by station... Renewed excitement when they met again in the tournament...

"Sayis, she's--!"

Despair and heartbreak when he learned of her death.

"I know," he said one last time, lowering his eyes and lifting his palm toward Wisteria.

Then his arm shifted, pointing toward Haresuno. "Kuyou Shibari," he called out. Even as he aimed at the Adept, his eyes were on Lilith. If there had been any chance for leniency before, it was now gone.

He suspected that she already knew that.

[322/2180]

The kidou took it’s hold over the Adept quickly, and soon he was off the ground, eight swirling black orbs dancing around him with one placed on his chest. He felt like he was at the receiving end of multiple casts of Shou, or even Daishou.

The look in Sayis’ eyes as he stared down Lilith, it brought about a nervous smile to Haresuno. “Oh my, he’s not happy at all with what just happened is he?” The quip had been strained due to his situation, but the nervous humor was evident. “You might want to think about running.”

I’m safe after all. Or, well, relatively safer, he thought bitterly.

Time to get desperate. The smile faded, and in it’s place was the annoyed expression of Haresuno’s facial features. “So this is how the mighty Inuzuri I admired so much fights?” He laughed sarcastically, the mockery dripping from his words. “Bullies his way into a fight, and when he can’t stand the pressure he wanted, he tries to loop-hole and run away somehow?

“Bull shit!” Hot anger reverberated through his words next. His face taking on a dark expression from the shadows that deepened his face. “We played with you a little bit and you look like you’re about ready to throw a temper tantrum. Is the weight of Soutaichou so heavy on you that this is what you’ve resorted to?

“Where’s the creativity that you so passionately pushed me after? Where’s the cool and calm mind that I always saw, always wish I had? Did Lilith hit something too close to you, is that it?

“You know what? Give me Theron to fight mano y mano, or even Tsubaki. If I wanted a brute force to deal with, those are the opponents who should show it to me -- not you.

“Pull your head outta’ your ass, Sayis, then maybe you’d see better results out of the students who you taught. All this talk about the lessons you gave us, but what about the lessons you learned while in the Tenth -- not the First!”

Thank god Sayis had never met Hayato. Some of the assassin had slipped into Haresuno in that little speech.

[2065]

“Tch,” Lilith hissed as Haresuno continued his speech. He was being an idiot, no doubt, and his insults were so inaccurate that she wondered if her partner knew anything about Sayis at all. However, his outrageous rant drafted the Soutaichou’s attention away just long enough for Lilith’s ribbon to take effect.

In an instant, the dark-haired woman was gone, fading into the shadows and leaving nothing but pebbles and rocks in her place.

Then a moment later, malevolence spoke.

“This is pretty nostalgic, eh, Inuzuri? With me and your girlfriend around, you must feel like a baby again.”

A scrawny excuse of a girl stood behind the Soutaichou. Ratty black pigtails spiked outwards, contrasting against the sickly pale tone of her skin. And across her eyes, spanning from temple to temple, a pale blue band was tattooed.

She stepped forward, letting her loose haori shift with the slight breeze. Raising a gloved hand, the sleeves, lined with a vibrant dark material, slid past her wrists to reveal revolting arms covered in old bandages and scabs. And beside her, a colossal, hideous weapon floated, swelling with abhorrent energy and covered with putrid slime, rank with the odor of rotting flesh. Maggots crawled and bellied along the blade, twisting and curling around the eye-like designs as they dripped and squirmed to the ground.

The assassin girl smiled -- a nauseating act that revealed a black gap in place of her missing bicuspid. Her eyes filled with sickening playfulness that was reminiscent of a dead child.

“So are you a decent fighter yet? Or are you still a better secretary?”

With a laugh that emanated forth from repugnant lips, she swung the massive, disgusting naginata at the gray-haired captain.

[288/1,890]

Louhi
Warning if you attack her. There might be a nasty spell inside.

“My, my,” the nobleman said loftily from the canyon’s ledge. “These candidates don’t seem very prudent.”

To say that it was unwise to incite the most powerful individual the Gotei Thirteen had to offer would be a gross understatement. “Perhaps they feel allowed a certain amount of leeway with their former captain. But there is no sense in or excuse for poking a sleeping bear in the eye with a short stick.

“This is about to get ugly.”

[78/597]

The nobleman shook his head in agreement.

Makoto took the words right out of Senesati's mind. He knew that poking at the grey captain's thoughts, memories and emotions would turn sour very quickly. Then again, Sayis has always been known to do the complete opposite and surprise even those that have known him for many moons.

It was now a waiting game...

"well now, this is not gonna end well for them. It's like playing with fire."

Ishin had kept his mouth shut when Wisteria had appeared. He had had some interaction with the purple haired girl back when the tournament before the incursion into hueco mundo. It was the sight of Louhi, though, that made him shake his head and feel sorry for the two candidates. This was not the way to unnerve Sayis.

This was the way to piss him off.

"And the more fire you wield in anger, the more you will blind yourself to your own mistakes." Next to the convict Tsubaki was sitting upright, watching the fight unfold just as her peers around her. "I had thought my words would have been enough to make Sayis act appropriately in this fight, but her..." She smiled to herself as the girl continued to taunt Inuzuri with ghosts from his past. Managing a small chuckle, the Templar Queen turned her lone eye to Katsuji.

"...I pushed his buttons one way, and she's pushing them the other."

[96/1,193]
Back, not jumping in just yet though...might be waiting on feat staff..

Note
This happens about .00001 seconds after my turn in Pheonix Down. P.S. Makoto's ringtone for Lucia should be This on repeat....

The battle below was temporarily disrupted by what appeared to be an extremely loud ringtone. The source? Makoto's phone. The tone grew louder and louder in volume, as an exclamation mark appeared on the phone screen, until it went silent once more. The device went dark, as the message was recorded onto a voicemail.

"Uhh, Captain this is Lucia" said the noblewoman, "I tried getting a hold of the Captain Commander, but they said he was out, and I don't have his contact info. The unconscious man found in front of the Tenth... We managed to bring him back, though he managed to tell us something before he slipped back again. The bounties submitted to the Twelfth... Vice-Captain Feng, Vice-Captain Akio and I have think that they are fake, and those targeted innocent. Feng and Akio have already gone to the bounties that have already started to stop them, just in case what this man is saying is true. I was planning on joining them after I got a hold of you... but since I couldn't get a hold of you, I'm leaving the message here for now."

[153]

"A 'fighter,' eh?" Sayis murmured, more to himself than the apparition. The ache in his chest grew deeper as deep red rivulets of blood poured down the center of his scarred abdomen. With a swift twist of his wrist, the long silver polearm flashed and crossed over his shoulder, intercepting the naginata. That, more than anything, assured him that this phantom was not the real deal. Lilith had mentioned in their meeting that she could read minds -- it was obvious that these images were drawn from his own mind.

Images... but without the true weight behind them that his own memories held.

"You know, I never was a great fighter," Sayis said, back still toward his former captain. "One thing I was always good at, though..." With a sudden clang, his spear knocked back her naginata. The Soutaichou swung the spear up and then in a blur of motion, he spun. The silver spear flashed, tearing through Louhi and Wisteria in the same grand swipe.

Like the phantoms they were, each of the women burst apart, their all-too familiar voices screaming, Louhi with wrath and Wisteria with terror. The familiar tones struck several chords in him. The Soutaichou finished the movement facing back toward Haresuno and Lilith hidden behind her veil of rocks.

There was a building whine of reiatsu behind him, around him.

"... was taking a hit..."

The ground began to crack under his feet just before ebon walls built up around him, enclosing him in their lightless confines. Chills rolled down his spine, the deathlike space tightening in on him. It was a terror he had felt before... it was terror he had overcome before. Sayis closed his eyes as the walls finished forming, as vines climbed up his body, prepared for the pain, for the burning chill of death, the heat of his own blood pouring from his body.

Understanding, preparation... fear beaten by calm, pain outstripped by determination.

He let the feelings build inside him, let the warm center of his resolve burn as the cold hands of death sought to embrace him. It began to simmer, to churn. Sayis' reiatsu, till now muted, erupted forth. Blades of darkness stabbed into his skin, tore open his flesh; tendrils of unyielding bark wound around him... until the full weight of his reiatsu ripped those vines into tatters, shredded the flagitious coffin.

Every ounce of his reiatsu poured forth, spreading out around him, licking up over stones and curling up against what remained of the labyrinth walls. In the center of that teal conflagration stood the Soutaichou, now covered in new wounds, his haori nearly as red as it was white. He was bleeding from dozens of wounds, many of them soon to become new scars added to the tapestry of abuse his body had become. The hole in his chest had widened, pouring a small river of blood to mingle with the rest.

Yet... he stood. He didn't stumble, didn't slip to his knees, neither fled nor fell.

Sayis' eyes blazed, their probing gaze piercing through the potent reiryoku that his body exuded. They pierced through the distance, even seemed to pierce through the disguise to look straight into Lilith's eyes.

"The power to halt the strongest warrior, sing." His voice was gruff, hardened; it was far from the gentle tone his subordinates and students remembered. This was Sayis as they had never truly seen him before: no longer the teacher, the mentor, this was the Soutaichou, ready and willing to die to protect those who were precious to him and to protect the world of the living.

A Soutaichou who expected nothing less from those who stood among them as peers.

"Kin."

At the utterance of that single word, the air filled with ribbons of pure, solid reiryoku. The white ribbons snapped tight around empty air. There was a surprised cry from the vice-captain as her illusion was ripped away and the bindings tightened around her arms, locked by shafts of iron.

Those hardened eyes turned toward his other vice-captain, still struggling against the endless pull and tug of the nine black holes.

"Limit of the thousands hands, sacred hands of unreachable darkness, shooting hands of the invisible sky." Reiatsu burgeoned forth as Sayis began to walk forward, leaving a trail of crimson footprints. "The path that drops light, wind that stirs up the embers; do not hesitate to gather, look at my fingers." His left hand was lifted up, power coalescing around the extended digits. "Light bullets, eight bodies, nine articles, tome of heaven, diseased treasure, great wheel, grey turret. Aim far away and disappear brightly." Sayis stopped, only twenty feet from Haresuno, a look of pity crossing his eyes as he uttered the final words.

"Senju Kouten Taihou."

Like a solar flare, the rays of pure light seared the air as they left his hand. The charge of reiatsu left his arm tingling in the aftermath of power. The light rivaled that of the sun itself, whiting out everything for a few brief seconds as those spears came into existence... and just as quickly snuffed out, drawn directly toward the unfortunate target of Kuyou Shibari.

As in the words of the very incantation, Haresuno disappeared, washed away in the white fire.

Already feeling the enormous strain of unleashing two nineties-level spells back to back, the Soutaichou held his left arm out toward Lilith, unable to see her but having no trouble feeling the billowing reiatsu of her bankai.

"First song: halting fabric," he grated out, finishing the second part of his first spell, sending even more iron-like ribbons of reiatsu to ensnare the woman. "Second song: hundred linked bolts!"

He repaid the cold touch of death with the cold touch of steel, the rain of blades piercing the vice-captain from every angle.

Light still burned brightly, scorching his exposed skin, drying the sheen of sweat and blood on his body. "Final song: Great Seal of Ten Thousand Forbiddings."

There was a heavy tone of totality as Sayis spoke the final word: "Bankin."

[1010/3190]

Note
His full reiatsu (about 80k non-shikai) is blazing forth.

Senju Kouten Taihou is ostensibly an area-effect/cone type spell. Kuyou Shibari, though, will draw all of the dozens of lances of light to Haresuno (yes, it's you). They explode in a 15-foot/5 meter radius.

Although Lilith is using her item to hide, keep in mind that Sayis is an adept user of Reiatsu no Senpuku, a superior version of what the item can do. She's also in bankai and cannot hide her reiatsu, particularly not with an item.

Grinning, Tsubaki turned her eye to Katsuji once again. "Ishin, have you ever sat in judgment of one of these and feel like you got gypped in your own?" Chuckling to herself, the Templar Queen turned her attention back towards the carnage.

"Sorry, just a thought."

[46/1,239]

She had been waiting for this. Despite her mind-reading, the illusions… Despite that she had successfully hit Sayis with a simultaneous attack of Death Rose and Kurohitsugi, the Mystic captain-candidate had simply been biding her time before Sayis-soutaichou finally unleashed his inferno of power upon them. The Arcane King erupted and snared both her and Haresuno in the dominating gales of his power.

And as she waited…

Both arms bound behind her back.

The tumultuous thumps of multiple iron shafts hitting the ground.

The deathly incantations.

To the screams of Haresuno as his body was ravaged by the impaling spears of light.

And the splotches of red that spattered the ground.

…Lilith felt both terror and pride. This moment of absolute agony was only reserved for a select few -- for those that Sayis deemed strong enough… or those that he intended to kill.

The fabric wound around her, wrapping the dark-haired woman at whipping speed, mummifying her, readying the corpse, from head to toe.

And though she tried to be brave -- she desperately yearned to save face in front of the Gotei captains -- to show her strength and veil her fears. But in knowing the dreaded fate that awaited her, Lilith could not stop the screaming that thrust outwards from her throat and left scores of painful jolts along her neck.

The blades came next. Endless javelins thrust all through her body, tearing through her flesh, coating the fabric in waves of red as her blood soaked the sheaths. The volcanic pain that bolstered through her felt like an eternal abyss of gory torture.

Her screams, her grief, resonated so deeply that she couldn't hear the massive stone cube shifting above her. The immense final wave of the attack was suspended high above the stadium, towering over all of the taishuu's viewers.

And finally… the finishing blow dropped.

The incredible speed, the profoundly dense mass, all led to the enormous culmination of momentum that plummeted down and crashed upon Lilith, sending a colossal wave of energy through the arena, shaking the entire landscape and forcing the sky to fill with black haze and dust.

A small pocket of air focused around Lilith. And as the ramparts of the vengeful calamity finally began to dissipate, the woman could be seen. She lied there, face to the ground, covered in red and brown fabric, falling in and out of consciousness.

With what little energy she had left, she used to try to burn away the kidou with Taikaku Chuutetsu. But even then, her attempts were too late to be useful. Despite her forced release of energy, she could only remove the sheaths around her head to reveal an exhausted and sodden face. The compelling power of Sayis-soutaichou's blow invalidated all further efforts of relief, leaving her to remain in long, slow agony.

Is this it..?

Her reiatsu began to falter. Her eyes grew too weary to open again.

Accepting that her part of the battle ended here, Lilith managed a slight smile.

Then a moment later, a rush of joy filled the entire arena as a group of familiar men and women appeared before the captain-commander. Friendly faces all beamed up at Sayis -- Ilsa, Mitsuyo, Picca, Kyuto, Hisao, Conrad, Katsumi, Shukumei, Kazuhiko, Yuurei, Daichi, Leone, Vincent… and new reflections of Lilith and Haresuno.

Together, their voices cheered.

"Thank you for being our captain, Sayis-soutaichou."

Until finally, they all disappeared and Lilith's breaths were silent.

[577/2467]

Ishin could not help but chuckle aloud at Tsubaki's comment.

"Yeah, everytime. Then I remember that I got put up against that weirdo from the Second, and i realize that no matter what I always seem to get the short end of the stick. So I don't mind so much anym-"

Ishin stopped when the scene below started to slow. His eyes focused and his breathing and pace quickened. His fists clenched and unclenched and then turned his head to Makoto.

"I think you're up."

It took everything he had to keep himself from going down there himself.

Haresuno had waited too long to slip out of the bakudou. The next thing he knew his world was enveloped by the light of Sayis’ kidou, and the Captain Commander’s eyes flickering with pity.

Haresuno gathered up his reiatsu defensively, pressing it against his bonds as the painful lances started skewering him.

Painful howls leaped out from his throat. White hot agony dancing across his body.

Damn that man. Damn him!

These years he had taught him, tutored him and saw to it that Haresuno didn’t fall. Now he pitied him? Pity?!

Anger started boiling in his gut, consuming his fear. He heard Lilith scream, and that anger doubled. His friend was out there, getting hurt, and he wast stuck. No. Just no.

Haresuno’s screams became frenzied, and he felt the pressure of the magicks holding him bend, weakening, and the piercing lances that punctured his body somehow shimmered even in the brilliant light.

The ground came to his feet, and Haresuno felt weak. His body ravaged and destroyed from the unforgivable attack. The light started dying, and he slumped, blood splattering against the earth, painting it a dark red.

Then there was his own back. Clean and untouched, dissolving in the wind as Lilith fell unconscious.

Now only Haresuno and Sayis stood alone in the arena, and it didn’t look as though the Adept would be there long. Warm blood ran down every part of his body in a stream, and his breath was ragged. His azure eyes were furious, and glared at the Soutaichou.

“Bastard,” he coughed. Blood, too, spilled from his mouth as he staggered forward. The world was now going dark around the edges of his vision, and Sayis looked so far away. Bullheadedly, he still moved on. His right hand on his zanpakuto. “Bastard,” he cursed again, “this... wasn’t a test... at all.”

In a final act of defiance, Haresuno drew Xiezhi. Taking with the move the last of his physical fortitude, and hitting the ground with a sickening crunch and splash as he fell against the hard earth, and his own pooling blood.

[2417]

Note:
Haresuno used this just as he was being hit by the hadou:

[Hitei Reiatsu] - "Negation Reiatsu"
[Unique]

Because Haresuno is constantly receiving attacks from kidou, or kidou-esque attacks, his reiatsu has adapted itself to resist such assaults.

Haresuno is able to reduce the effectiveness of any kidou or energy-based effects (cero, energy based kai, or race equivalent) by half. This is a passive effect against abilities or kidou that cost up to 4% of his total reiatsu. He can actively choose to pay 10% reiatsu per round to dampen stronger abilities, but can only maintain that for up to one round per 4000 connection.

This resistance is a double-edged sword, however: it also passively dampens beneficial abilities such as Chiyudou or personal buffs, and spells that target the caster such as Banshiissei.

It cost him 10% his rei but he hit both the hadou and the bakudou holding him.

He needs healing, bad, but who ever's going to do it remember that unless you beat his 4%, your healing is only half as effective. It has a small AoE so it'll effect things like Cleansing Barrier if you use that.

"I never said it was," Sayis replied regretfully. Walking closer toward the two fallen vice-captains, he explained, "Call it a lesson. This... is what you can expect to feel as a captain. That suffocating fear... the weight of forces you can't control." His grey eyes roamed from one to the other, thankful to see both of them still breathing. If he had overestimated their strength...

Shaking his head, he went on. "Knowing that your allies are facing the same insurmountable odds and there is little you can do to protect yourself, much less them...

"Ask Tsubaki and Theron and Ishin... being a captain means facing impossible tasks, fighting unconquerable enemies... and overcoming them. More than leadership, training, and inspiration... to be a captain is to do the things that no one else can do."

The Soutaichou wearily looked up at the top of the gorge. "Kaede... Makoto... please put these two back together. Then... we can begin the taishuu."
