~ Never Backward ~

Blood-red light cast across the late-evening sky, the deep glow of sunset filtering through the thickening blanket of clouds that surrounded a clean, open hole in the center. Screams and thunderous rumbling echoed across Japan's tallest mountain. There, on the peaks, tears in the fabric of reality poured out hollows, their collective roars seeking to drown out the shuddering mountain beneath them.

Menos Grande stood at each of Mount Fuji's eight peaks, the towering Gillian holding open garganta to allow their lessers to enter the world of the living en masse.

In the center of the crater, with stone cracking beneath their feet and scalding, noxious gases spewing upward, four captains of the Gotei Thirteen stood against a former of their number, a vizard and former Kenpachi.

One figure stepped past them, his back to the threat at the core; putting his faith in his captains, Sayis Inuzuri, Soutaichou of the Gotei Thirteen, walked away.

His first steps were slow, pendulous... but with each step, his pace increased. His one-sleeved haori billowed out behind him, long-grey hair whipped along in the breeze. His sandals slipped and skid several times on the loose gravel and from the shudders of the mountain beneath him, but he did not look backward. His pale grey eyes were forward, aimed at the nearest, and lowest of the eight peaks.

"Hitotsu!"

The tattoos spiraling down his arm glowed with teal reiatsu; the mitsudomoe at its core, just below his shoulder, served as a constant reminder of his creed. If not for trusting in it, he never would have come as far as he had; he never would have seen some of his best and brightest officers grow to become captains. Now, he had to trust in its meaning again, and have faith that they would succeed in defeating Theron Ascania.

His role in that would be to ensure that they had that chance: not a single hollow would interrupt their battle.

Sayis would see to that.

The silver spear Karino Yadori no Kamayari, with its two rear-swept hooks complementing its broad blade, lifted above his head, held aloft by the translucent teal arm projecting from his shoulder. As he ran, the arm jerked forward.

Karinoyo shot high overhead, like an arrow loosed from its bow. The spear soared high and far, cutting through the mountainous winds. At the apex of its trajectory, suddenly Sayis was there clutching the metal haft. Reiatsu gathered beneath his sandals, cushioning his fall enough to hold him aloft. Without missing a beat, the spear was launched once more, climbing higher, aiming for the rim of the vast crater where the hollows were massing. Again, and again he launched the spear, each time going farther before teleporting.

Ahead, below the crimson cover of darkening clouds, the first Menos stood. Immensely tall, the otherworldly beast had a mockingly human shape, as of a man wearing long black robes. Its white mask, with simply circles for eyes and a long, pointed nose, was the signature of a Menos Grande; a powerful amalgamation of souls without a single dominating will. Its white hands, with long, pointed fingernails, held open the fabric of reality as if it was a curtain, hollows gathering next to the creature's alabaster boots.

Karinoyo launched straight upward, disappearing into the crimson clouds.

"The kingdom's army, sworn to crush the enemy." Sayis' reiatsu billowed outward, sending ripples through the clouds. "The call to arms begins as each soldier takes up a weapon to defend their honor!" The Menos Grande lifted its head, staring blankly upward. Its mouth opened, a red glow beginning to form. Sayis plummeted from the clouds, zanpakuto gripped in both hands. The double-edged broadsword gleamed, its silver edge reflecting the red light as the air around it filled with many-colored facsimiles. "As they march forward, eighty warriors race outward to drive back their many opponents to finish the war."

The whine of the charging cero was ringing in his ears even past the whipping winds but there was no hesitation. "Hadou Ninety-Three, Gun no Kyousei!"

All around him, the dozens of colored blades flashed and shot straight for Karil, setting the blade aglow, a rainbow of colored light thrumming with barely contained reiryoku, the undulations of raw power coursing down Sayis' arms.

Hollow roars rose up around him, hungry shouts and bellows, the beasts unaware of their own impending purification, seeing only a feast falling straight for them.

With a reverberating hum, the Menos Grande unleashed the cero, Sayis' world washing away to carmine. It was too late, though: the beam shot straight past his head as he fell. The Soutaichou's arms swung down, and with a resounding crack, Karil cleaved straight through the mask of the Menos Grande.

Sayis continued his descent, arms locked tight; Karil split through the mask and straight down the creature's body, blood spewing and floating skyward. Even as its cero blasted a hole through the curtain of clouds, the Gillian was already purifying, disintegrating to white particles, hundreds, perhaps thousands of souls freed to return to Soul Society.

The Soutaichou hit the ground with a loud thud, sword still held in both hands. The black tear in the sky drifted lazily closed, gradually sealing itself shut, mending the first of eight such rifts. The Menos Grande's body faded to white, and slowly, with purpose, Sayis Inuzuri stood, surrounded by the white glow of purified reiryoku floating skyward.

His grey eyes spoke only of determination, Karil gripped tightly in his right hand. With a flash of silver, Karino Yadori no Kamayari was gripped in his left.

All around him, surrounding him in a tight circle, were dozens, perhaps hundreds of hollows. They stood or crouched, some perched upon rocks while others circled the skies overhead, flapping ponderously. Red eyes glared at the Soutaichou from beneath white masks, teeth gnashing, claws bared. Sayis smiled grimly and then his eyes narrowed, the weight of his reiatsu hammering down on the monsters.

Without another word, he attacked.

[1000/1000]

From the teeming masses a new group festered and crowed. Bestial masks of varying details adorned their faces. Hooked claws and cracked teeth chattered as a guttural screech echoed from them. The first dashed madly towards the Soutaichou, effluvial hunger awash in its mouth. Its jaw cracked wide, aiming to clamp down on the man's right bicep.

A second and third lunged with equal abandon - jockeying for position as their jagged claws slashed feverishly at his chest. A final brute stood a short ways away, its own mask stretched inhumanly wide. Ivory became awash in crimson light, and with the deep roar that seemed to echo from every direction, it unleashed the abhorrent beam of Cero - discriminating against neither friend nor enemy as it bore down upon the man entirely.

[ 132 / 132 ]

Together with the four bigger hollows, a small swarm of thirty hollows broke out of the masses as well. The swarm was composed of mainly one kind of hollow. Not larger than a pony, those lizard like hollows began to charge at Sayis baring their teeth.

That was not all though. From the air two hollows that looked like pterodactyls plummet down on Sayis with their sharp claws aiming for his left and right arm. They cried out ear deafening, trying to not get squished in mid air by the tremendous reiatsu the Shinigami emitted.

[95/95]

In a barrage of sword strokes, the incoming cero was obliterated. It was a joke compared to the one he had faced down second earlier.

"Mitsu," Sayis called out, gripping the summoned blade with Shouaku Jukutatsu.

Karil in one hand, Karinoyo in the other, with Shouaku Jukutatsu gripping the third blade. Together the three weapons covered near, mid, and far. Against a single opponent, it would make him unapproachable.

Against the coming horde, it made approaching him extremely painful.

Waiting until the hordes of lesser hollows rushed in, Sayis acted all at once, attacking in a flurry of motions at every hollow within range. Every strike found a target, every blade sank into mask or flesh. Blood spilled, floated upward, before another swarm of white particles surrounded him.

Already his breathing was labored, but the battle had barely begun. Despite of his worries, Sayis cast not a single glance backward.

[150/1150]

I was kind of waiting for more people to post and ended up waiting too long.

In this case, all the attackers would be defeated, though.

Careful not to split your hordes too much! That makes them very susceptible to techniques like Buzei.

Still yet the throng swelled in rank - the second Menos Grande looming large in the distance. Its ponderous form swayed in the stiff Japanese winds. The soft hum of the Garganta continued to echo - an unsettling chorus as six others hummed likewise.

Another pair of hollows leapt - eager for the meal before them. Their masks seemed to be one half of another, a more coordinated pair that leapt at his legs and neck with matching claws. High-pitched chattering echoed from their crimson-flecked maws, the telltale sign of a hollow that had seen prey before. "F-f-food! E-e-eat!"

A third, however, glanced with empty, beady sockets up beyond the massive meal before them - a rivaling feast calling to its eternal gluttony. Sinking down onto all four of its stocky limbs, it scampered quickly towards the rim of the crater behind Sayis!

[ 143 / 275 ]

A fourth Hollow started to attack Sayis as well. In pure anger, because the man in the haori had killed so many of its kind, the hollow began to form a cero in its mouth. The red beam of death grew larger and larger until it had the diameter of a huge cartwheel, before it went off with a bang.

The mantis hollow closed its mouth again and ran in Sayis’ direction, with its huge scissor-like claws high in the air, to grasp him and lock him close to her body. Her footwork was beyond that of a normal hollow. It seemed like the four legs catapulted this hollow at the soutaichou, rather than just running in his direction. With her huge mandibles, the mantis hollow was ready to mangle whatever would come in between them.

[136/231]

the heightened speed is the result of the ability slot a hollow gains upon reaching at least 3k rei.

Despite Sayis’ bold defense, the assault began to pick up in ferocity. The cries and shouts of ravenous beasts filled the air and their bodies filled the land.

From behind the mantis, the gluttonous form of the next hollow loomed. The ground shook as the gargantuan beast began to trundle forward. Standing easily over fifteen-feet tall, the obese monstrosity lumbered towards the Arcanist.

It raised its left arm, as its own weight grotesquely redistributed itself. The arm grew to an immense size, as the torso shrunk in turn. With a deafening swing downwards, it sought to crush the puny Captain Commander.

[101]

Sayis slipped into a rare flash-step, blinking behind the twinned hollows. Without turning to face them, the Soutaichou called out, "Daishou!" A black arrow appeared behind the hollows, throwing them forward into the oncoming cero.

Without hesitation, Karinoyo lunged forward, skewering the mantis-like hollow, shattering its mask! Dashing forward, Karil crossed over and ripped upward, splitting the larger hollow in an upward diagonal slash.

While the hollows dissipated, Sayis' grey eyes flicked toward the runner. "Slice through the beast's sin. Bleed the flesh and cleanse the soul! Reaper!" A blade of sonic energy rippled through the air, longer than Sayis was tall, splitting the beast in two.

Then Sayis set his sights on the next Menos Grande. He started running through the opening, rushing toward the towering monstrosity.

[130/1280]

In the distance, a low rumbling accompanied the soft hum of the Garganta -the non-descript mask of the Menos Grande cracking wide to reveal the empty abyss within. Massive globules of deep crimson and utter black gathered to a single point before its maw, slowly coalescing into the ultimate Hollow attack.

A single hollow blocked the Soutaichou's path. Totemic in appearance, its wide cylindrical body loomed above the man. Segmented limbs reared back, a small jettison of air issuing forth as a small column shot from the back of its arm, extending to nearly the length of the entire arm!

With a guttural roar, its fist slammed downwards. The archaic piston slammed shut, and the ground beneath Sayis cracked as it released a massive wave of pressurized energy that distorted the very air around the offending hand!

Rearing back another hand, it prepared another piston as, in the distance, the crimson glow of the Menos Grande's rapport tapered off.

The rumbling bass of Cero echoed long and loud, caring not for the hollow in its path nor the Soutaichou behind it. The beam shot forward, vaporizing the totemic hollow before it could even prepare its second blow... and quickly reached Sayis himself!

The ground beneath the shinigami’s feet started to shake, rattling just enough to upset the top-most layer of dirt. The ancient debris danced a few millimeters above the ground, at first, seeming to move in waves, like rippling water. The disturbance was slight but it spread quickly, turning the almost non-existent hum into a low rumble. Small stones and rubble kicked up off the ground, tapping against each other, resonating with the beginnings of an earthquake and now, must have been a clear warning to the captain.

The ground seemed to bleed, thick, black ooze starting to seep out from beneath the rocks and brown soil. The ooze puddled and writhed, clearly struggling against the massive reiatsu that bore down upon it and spread it thin. Dozens of black spots, spread out all around the crater, coagulated, pushing together to form some kind of small creature. Shrill cries shrieked from the tiny manifestations as they were torn apart, just as quickly as they formed, crushed by the sheer force of reiatsu.

The puddles stretched out, furiously trying to grab hold of the rushing warrior’s feet, though they simply could not keep up with his speed. Once again, they splashed together and made larger, black, roach-like creatures. The multitude of evolving demons moved from rolling liquid into skittering bugs, small white masks adorning the pincer-led bodies. Their chirping and shrieking intensified with their speed, as they were now able to gain on the arcane master. All at once, a swarm of black lept out to overcome and devour the soul.

Additionally to the rumbling those insects had created, another low-pitched grumble could be heard, gaining volume each second. In the distance, two screens of smoke came at Sayis in high speed. Inside those streams, two black balls rolled through the crater before they split up. One of them rolled in a huge curve to come at Sayis from the right, while the other one came from the left.

Each of the two balls had the size of a full grown elephant and created a huge swath where they had rolled. Contrary to their size, however, the hollows looked like hedgehogs. With their spines turned into the direction they were rolling, they threatened to pierce Sayis.

A third hollow - only half as weak as one of the hedgehogs - started to chase after Sayis while the opening of the hollows formation closed itself again. The bee-like hollow shot stings at him out of its huge bum and a salve of poisoned stings was flying at the soutaichou, aimed for his back.

[171/402]

And so in turn did the remaining Menos appear larger as Sayis approached. The looming figures off in the distance began to grew closer, heralding the continuation of the onslaught.

The heavy flapping of wings could be heard Sayis, as a humanoid creature hovered in the sky. Thin and lanky, though possessing a pair of immense, bat-like, wings, the hollow wore a simple porcelain mask, devoid of facial features. It whipped its two arms downwards, revealing the razor-sharp clawed appendages. The arms elongated, muscle fibers lengthening, as its two arms sought the Captain Commander’s neck from above.

Surrounded on all sides, Sayis had no choice but to react quickly -- and did so by throwing Karinoyo and diving low to slam the cero from beneath, grunting with effort as the reiatsu-infused zanpakuto met the red beam... and redirected it skyward!

Without pausing to view the results, the Soutaichou blinked away, reappearing next to the Menos Grande and ripping the silver spear from its boot. That massive foot lifted as the Menos bellowed, preparing to squash the shinigami. Sayis flashed behind it, rapidly spinning around as the incantation rolled from his lips. "Winter's breath, the glacial apocalypse. Forty-three ice floes, seventy-two white rivers. A gelid landscape remains. Hell itself freezes before the power to start an Ice Age. Hadou Ninety-Four, Hyouga Seiran!"

From his extended left hand, spear gripped tightly, an avalanche of snow burst into existence, an immense wave of ice and snow that snapped the hidden legs of the Menos Grande. The frozen wasteland hit like a tsunami crashing over the Gillian as it toppled, pulverizing the swarm of bugs and the bee behind them. The spiny-backed hollows, even curled up with armor upward, could not withstand the force of the frozen hell of the glacial storm.

The Menos Grande bellowed one final time as its frozen mask shattered, its passage to Hueco Mundo fluttering closed.

Sayis took one moment to stare at the sparkling, frozen landscape, reflecting back the red light overhead, with the clouds of white particles floating upward like it was still a snowstorm.

Then he turned around, racing toward the third Menos.

[260/1540]

Another hollow bellowed, its form chasing after the Soutaichou. Its maw stretched wide - the mask's mouth obscured by a number of thick bars running horizontally across it - and the thin strands that hung in its mouth expanded!

Lengthening and expanding, the bars that once sealed shut the mouth of the hollow launched outwards, looping ahead of the Soutaichou before reeling back suddenly - aiming to catch him around the stomach and drag him to the waiting mouth of the beast, its lumbering form lunging forward to catch its prey with hooked arms.

A second beast attacked from above - ivory wings folding with a noisy clatter as it dived harshly. Conical head aimed directly for the man's neck, the sharpened beak of its mask lunged for his neck.

[ 130 / 607 ]

Pitched cries shrieked from the swarm, rage, hunger and defeat echoing into the frosty air. As the rushing torrent of ice barreled over the menos and the landscape, it crushed the man’s opponents, large and small alike. Most of the bug-like bodies were instantly vaporized, burst into the ebony plume of dark energy that signaled a hollow’s end. The rest, though, regressed into the virulent black fluid, from which they came, and disappeared beneath the icy blanket.

The disappearing shrieks and cries faded into the nothingness that echoed across the pristine ice. For a moment, as Sayis sped toward the third giant, he was left unencumbered but hardly free of imminent threat. The ground began to shake again, rumbling from the turmoil below. The darkness crept up, quickly, and seemed to flood the world beneath the ice. It rushed out in every direction, cracking the frozen waters from below. Within a few brief seconds, the ice exploded outward, shards glistening in the cooled air, as the black pool conformed and molded into a tower of death.

The body materialized, almost instantly, into that of another roach-like demon, much like the first formed but much, much larger. The tortured soul let out wail of rage and hunger, hundreds of tiny limbs wiggling across its exposed underside. Pincers and a frothy maw squirmed below a large ebony faceplate, simple and ovular, with two downward facing spikes, pointing toward the beast’s acidic mouth. Recoiling from its upright position, the hollow barrelled down from behind Sayis and lunged out with its gargantuan fangs, hungering to taste his flesh.

264/523

With the hedgehogs dead, a roar could be heard in the distance.

While Sayis continued his path to the third Menos, a rain of dark arrows volleyed in his direction. A good range in front of him a hollow - with four huge tentacles spread in the form of an X - stood and prepared a second volley.

Small blistered formed all along the tentacles before they became longer and came off. Those lines immediately rocketed in Sayis direction, aimed for his eyes, neck and all the other vital parts of his body.

[93/495]

As he ran, the Soutaichou's eyes flicked upward. With a thought, his pseudo blade sliced at the speeding avian hollow, bifurcating the creature and sending its two halves to smack wetly against the stone. Gripping the hilt of Karil tightly, Sayis' eyes narrowed at the entrapping bars rushing toward him. No thought or time was spared toward escape: instead, he lunged forward, swinging with all the strength and fury in his arm.

Blade met bars, a heavy chime echoing across the landscape... followed by a loud crunching sound as the zanpakuto split cleanly through two of the bars. Now with his way unobstructed, Sayis burst forward in a flash-step, skidding to a stop and pointing his spear-arm at the bug-like swarm and the big-mouthed hollow. The rain of projectiles slammed into the ground, narrowly missing him. His bangs lifted, sparks of static already beginning to fill the air.

Even brutish hollows such as these surely felt dread at the power that began coursing through his arm, before a word was even spoken... and one was all they would get.

"Hiryuugekizokushintenraihou!"

The electrical torrent burst through the floodgates of his arm, the wrathful cerulean storm striking from the end of his clenched fist. The beam was immense, blinding every hollow present with its raw, searing light, its roar drowning out the bellows of the hollows, wiping away the red gleam of the enduring bloody sunset, if only for a few seconds.

The wave of lightning engulfed the swarm and crashed against the de-toothed hollow where the full destructive force was unleashed, detonating in a massive, earth-shattering explosion that rivaled the tremors of the shuddering mountain.

But he could not marvel at his handiwork: immediately after, Sayis was running again, dashing straight toward the tentacled hollow, the heavy scent of ozone trailing after him.

[300/1840]

Dark matter burst into the atmosphere, dispersed by the explosive force from the demon magic, tearing asunder any remnants of either beast. Threat was still looming, though, bearing down upon Sayis with unrelenting hunger and bloodlust.

A human-like figure, female in silhouette, drifted across the crater, moving toward the Captain-Commander. A slender white mask, pristine and polished like porcelain, adorned the face of the demoness. Two eyes, sad and turned slightly upward, rested above a mouthless face. The tortured soul approached, slowly, gliding over the ground. Where there would be feet, instead, the lower body of the hellish maiden simply faded into what looked like tattered fabric, dragging along in the dirt. The same black material, neither hair nor fabric nor skin, rippled from the top of her head, as if gently blowing through the wind. Thin, long arms hung at her side, lifelessly following the body forward, and there, below her belly and in the middle of what would be a pelvis, was the empty hole.

Still at a distance, the figure let out a drawn out, sad wailing. Echoing softly from all around, the depressing song called out to Sayis, pleading, demanding, to be heard...and felt. The sorrow and despair in the tones would plunge their unseen hooks into the shinigami’s soul and drag him down into a pit of lethargy and destitute...

226/749

While the feminine hollow unleashed her lament, two batlike hollows broke away from the pack that assaulted Sayis. They were of a similar shape to the excrament of a few weeks' worth of dinners, but they each only possessed one wing. As the Soutaichou's reistasu billowed out over the battefield, they felt the pressure even from high above the scene.

Many meals! Many meals ahead!

The two beasts flew side by side, avoiding Sayis' gaze and heading toward the site of the fateful battle between the Captains and their fallen comrade. As they went along, they seemed to split into various doppelgangers of themselves. Soon, a virtual horde of batlike hollows each missing a wing sped towards the conflict about to erupt. Their brothers could feast on the gray man; they would capitalize on the varying meals ahead.

Something smelled like food.

The creature didn’t quite have arms, per se. It had weapons. The long blades stretched out form what looked somewhat like a humanoid torso with claw-like fingers on the underside of the weapon-arms. He, or she, or perhaps even it didn’t quite have a face either, as much as it had a gaping maw with insect-like mandibles which existed to guide things into the gaping maw. The horrifying orifice had several rows of shark-like teeth and it hung open like an expectant diner moving food to a hungry mouth. It also didn’t quite have eyes, instead it had a mask of bone, smooth and featureless, covering the entire face other than the insect-shark mouth-maw thing. It had four legs in addition to it’s two not-quite arms and protruding from its back were bony, dead wings like wilted flowers hangin limply from its back. It was a strange and hideous thing, and it made a noble charge at the gray man.

It wasn’t bright. The two smaller creatures that came along with it were smarter. They used the distractions of the allies they had moving against the death god. They used the distraction of the insect-shark-centaur, the feminine creature and the dynamic duo, to say nothing of the menos, to move to flanking positions and they took a deep breath. The little duo were serpentine, with small legs and arms that moved with the agility of a cheetah. They, too, had most of their faces covered in masks, ones that extended in almost a beak-like fashion. As the others move to attack, the little ones began to build red light in the hole at the end of their bone-beak.

The trio weren’t, in any way, coordinated with the others, but they, each, took openings available and exploited weaknesses others created. So, too, did their efforts create more weaknesses. Hopefully. Because the alternative was they wouldn’t get to feast. And would probably die. That was, however, less important.
