LEGACY OF THE BLOOD

Where the group known as the Quincy came from, no one can say for certain other than their history stretches back into antiquity beyond written historical records. What they are depends on who you ask. What can be said for certain is that their power is one of the most dangerous forces in this world. A soul killed by a Quincy is dead forever: obliterated beyond even the cycle of reincarnation. It is this power that has been the greatest strength of the Quincy as well as their bane.

THE TREATY
OF
CONSTANTINOPLE

(Written by Kishyotai)

The talent necessary to become a Quincy is hereditary. Father hands his skills down to son and that son passes his skills to the next generation. This has always ensured that the Quincy remains close to his family, and given them a ready-made group of allies should trouble happen. When the Quincy finally became numerous enough to become a formidable force, emissaries from the dead, the shinigami agreed to a tentative alliance. For centuries, they worked in harmony to keep the fledgling concept of human civilization safe from the ravages of the Hollow hordes.

Indeed, the arrangement went well until Soul Society scholars did a more in-depth study of what occurs to souls destroyed by Quincy. The Central 46 ordered test after test in hopes of the study being an aberration, but the reality of the facts soon set in: if the Quincy were allowed to operate en-masse, they would eventually be the slow death of all living things. Upon being confronted with the truth, the heads of each Quincy family called for a great meeting in Constantinople around the peak of the Byzantine Empire. Families from all corners of the known world made their way to discuss the future of the blood. It was there that an agreement was signed between the shinigami and the Quincy that would define their fate for the centuries to come.

The Treaty of Constantinople marked an end to the Quincy as a quasi-military organization and set about several rules governing the behavior of the members in the family:

  1. The Quincy were allowed to continue to exist on the condition that they adhered to the rule of succession: that being that in any given nuclear family there could only be two trained Quincy: one the master and the other the successor who would become the new master once he established a family of his own.

  2. The Quincy were no longer permitted to actively use their abilities except in the case of their own personal training and if the Gotei dictated that a threat was grave enough to merit calling on their aid. The Gotei historically has rarely exercised this option.

  3. Violation of the above rules were by any member of a given family were grounds for destruction of the entire bloodline.

  4. The sole exception to this rule is for self-defense against hollows. As beings with heightened reiatsu, Quincy, even the untrained ones, are natural targets for consumption.

  5. The treaty had amendments for its cessation should a situation occur that threatened the very balance of the world itself. This situation is commonly referred to by Quincy as the ‘Extinction Level Event.’
The majority of the families present at the Council of Constantinople agreed with the findings and somewhat reluctantly agreed to the terms of the treaty. The ones who didn’t were killed.

Since that time, the Quincy have taken a rather subdued place in history, having had no choice but to stand on the sidelines of the great spiritual battles raging beyond the veil of human perception. Every few decades, a family would go rogue and attempt to withdraw from the treaty, arguing that they were not alive for the signing and are therefore not subject to its terms. These families usually met gristly ends. The difference between an immortal point of view and a mortal point of view can be seen very clearly when looking at Quincy-Shinigami relations.

The net result of the rule of succession and the occasional cullings of rogue elements left the Quincy rather disorganized and thin of blood. What is the point of training relentlessly to hone abilities one is never going to use? Why submit oneself to arranged marriages with other Quincy to thicken blood that only leads to destruction? Slowly, many of the once proud bloodlines died out.

Those that remain continue their vigil, watching and waiting for the moment when their powers are needed once again. And when they decided that such an event had happened, the dead disagreed...

SCHWARZE NACHT
(Written by Kishyotai)

When Tokyo was invaded by a Vastro Lorde, the Quincy organized under the Treaty of Constantinople and voted that the Extinction Level Event spoken of in the treaty had happened. Under this, the Quincy assumed an aggressive role in pacifying the growing Hollow threat, concentrating their power in Tokyo and in Eastern Europe. Wartime conditions demanded that the family’s heads stay in one area so decisions could be made quickly and, under the rule of the Progenitor, the Quincy quickly established themselves against the Hollows.

The Central 46, wary of the Quincy’s powerful abilities and the effect they may have in a large battle, came to the conclusion that the humans were being too short-sighted and that the occurrence in question wasn’t an Extinction Level Event. Yet, in one of the largest gaffes of their rule, they hadn’t elected to tell the Quincy but took the cessation of the treaty as a declaration of war. Instead, they told then-captain-commander, Gabriel Faust, what had to be done: genocide.

On April 16th, the Gotei executed one of its most efficient operations in its long history. A three-division force headed by Ninth division captain, Saika Rakushun; Seventh division captain, Ishin Katsuji; and Eleventh division captain, Leon Valiente Simeon, all but carried out the eradication of the Quincy. The Gotei 13 retrospectively estimated 98% completion of the operation, which although had no name is known by surviving Quincies as the Schwarze Nacht; the "Black Night."

OPERATION DETAILS

Gabriel Faust detailed a plan modified from previous invasion protocols and selected his three most rebellious captains. He believed that while the Quincy were being shortsighted, the Central 46 had thought up a solution only they could think was right. In order to try and rectify their mistake, even by a little, he chose the invasion force based on who would let innocents live at their own discretion.

The Seventh division was deployed to Tokyo while the Ninth and Eleventh divisions were deployed at the estate of the Progenitor. Ishin Katsuji was assisted by Third division member, Takebachi Soramaru, in the purging of Tokyo. Saika Rakushun and Leon Valiente Simeon were charged with the death of the progenitor and the family heads.

The Ninth and Eleventh divisions attacked a complex that was completely isolated, so collateral damage worries were limited to human, non-spiritual aware individuals who worked as servants or helping hands at the large mansion. This operation was done with brutal efficiency, and not a single survivor escaped. After an initial two-pronged attack by Simeon's division, the Ninth division erected a barrier so that no Quincy could flee from the area. It was simply a matter of time before any non-Shinigami was found, also due to the brilliance of the captain of the Ninth division's technological preparations. The operation only encountered difficulty when the progenitor and family heads were engaged, but the Gotei 13’s pair of captains eventually persevered.

The dedication to their orders was matched only by the captains’ unyielding resolve to save part of the families. Women and untrained individuals under the age of 15 were spared and non-involved humans had memory wipes of a terrible infectious disease while Quincies that were spared were given high-grade memory alterations that would pacify them as long as no one explicitly brought the subject up.

Aside from that, any and all Quincy were killed.

The assault on Tokyo went similarly but, without the full power of the Ninth division, complete success couldn’t be attained. The Seventh division members executed a perfectly-timed, simultaneous strike on the Quincy strongholds under the cover of their tentative alliance, infiltrating the compounds before carrying out their orders. Katsuji foresaw the attempts at escape and detached squads to envelope fleeing Quincy. The Shinigami found the toughest task to be hunting down Quincy who had lived in Tokyo and, thus, knew the city better than they did. A few splinter cells of Quincy who hadn’t revealed themselves to the main families composed the majority of the survivors, with Quincies who were already at large at the time of the attack being all but eradicated.

IMPLICATIONS

As a whole, the operation was an immense success. Every main line from every family was wiped out. Officers had also led teams into the houses of the Quincy families and eradicated the weakened families who lacked their highly-trained, main-line members. Some Quincy families that had remained secluded from public interaction, however, survived with considerably less damage than their politically-active counterparts. While their main lines were wiped out, the branch family members all but disappeared and avoided the attacks of the Gotei 13 altogether. The after-action reports by the Second division estimate 2% of the Quincy population remained at large, with one-quarter of them even considering them searching for others.

Those Quincy that did survive focused only on self-preservation, whether for themselves or for their families as well. Cynicism was no longer a thought, but instead a reality as any individual simply attempted to survive long enough to pass on his or her blood and arts to the next generation. Every Quincy knew that Soul Society would not suffer their organized presence, but someone who could rally the Quincy would rule over them with unquestionable power.

RECONSTRUCTION
AND
RESISTANCE

(Written by swaswj)

Sebastian Erdeschalk, one of the survivors of Schwarze Nacht, began rallying others, hoping to bring together all of the surviving Quincy under one banner; not all under the name of Erdeschalk, but all working together towards rebuilding and surviving. His estranged sister, Eve Erdeschalk, also known by the alias of Lila Kaiserin, also survived, but kept to herself; she kept her rage mostly in check until the situation between the Sougi Towers, where Hollow bait was used and Shinigami arrived to help put down the threat. She attacked indiscriminately, aiming for Hollows and Shinigami alike, forcing the captain-commander of the Gotei 13, Sayis Inuzuri, to take her on personally. He defeated her, but let her live. In the aftermath, Sebastian found her and she helped support the reunification.

Shortly after, Sebastian left Japan to try and gather together survivors from other parts of the world. In his absence, a different sect of Quincy began gathering, wanting to actively wage war on Soul Society, not content with reuniting or continuing the old ways: the Quincy Resistance Front.

Eve, discontent with the Q.R.F.'s abandonment of Quincy pride, showed up to threaten them and chastise their weakness. Even then, though, she did not resist the opportunity to challenge Sayis again, this time with the captain of the Third Division, Theron Ascania, present. Sayis prevented Theron from killing her, but confiscated her Quincy artifact. Her main arm was also badly damaged in the battle. After her speech and witnessing her strength, though, the Q.R.F. disbanded.

Many still continued to band together under Erdeschalk, a temporary asylum to regain the traditions and pride of the Quincy, while others remained isolated or enjoyed the safety of sanctuaries that had been set up by Raifuku Anshinkan and continued to operate even after his death.
